Hope for breast cancer awareness, treatment, and research

In tribute of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, I’ve decided to repost about the Schwinn Hope series of scooters. The Schwinn Hope 50 raised over $100,000 over the last three years for breast cancer research, and Schwinn wants to do the same with its 150 version, the Hope 150.

Maybe the Hope will inspire you to do your own ride – for example, one Hope rider I know of, Barbara, rode her 50cc Hope 1,100 miles to honor her friend who passed away from breast cancer, and to raise money for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

The Schwinn Hope 150 has a suggested retail price of $1,999, and gets an estimated 87 miles per gallon. A portion of every sale goes to breast cancer awareness and research causes. Thank you to everyone who supported me in the Last Mile Ride this past weekend. I was again the top fundraiser – and I was also the only scooterist, and the only person wearing pink!

survivor rides 1,100 miles for breast cancer research

I first read about Barbara Landry and her Schwinn Hope in an article about her and her scooter ride in the Nashua Telegraph. I wrote to her and asked if I could post a photo here and tell you a bit about her ride.

Barbara is a breast cancer survivor who lost her friend and sister-in-law Dale Burnes Golinski to breast cancer last year. The loss inspired Barbara to plan a ride on her 50cc Schwinn Hope from New Hampshire to Georgia to raise money for breast cancer research in Dale’s honor. Her ride, which she calls Trails for Dale, starts today, and she plans to arrive in Georgia on August 9, the one year anniversary of Dale’s death.

As of the Telegraph article, Barbara had raised over $11,000 for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

Her scooter is a Schwinn – her second. The first, a 50th birthday present from her husband had unfixable technical difficulties after about 1,100 miles. She then purchased a Schwinn Hope to replace her old scooter, and has transfered the special-edition Georges Duboeuf designed panels from the old scooter to the new one.

Scootin’ for a Cure

I’m really proud that my company can play a part of Linda Quinn’s Scootin’ for the Cure. I made Linda and her co-rider Karen each a pink-ribbons-with-hearts scooter seat cover for their trip. Linda and Karen will be making a 6,000 mile trip across the US on their Vespa GTS scooters to help raise money and awareness for their participation in the Breast Cancer 3-Day in November. The journey starts today as Linda and Karen head to Tahoe for the Royal Bastards Scooter Club rally, so follow it on the Scootin’ for the Cure blog.

Schwinn Hope 150 – riding for a cure

The Schwinn Hope 50 raised over $100,000 over the last three years for breast cancer research, and Schwinn wants to do the same with its 150 version, the Hope 150.

If it looks familiar, it should – this is a style of scooter that a number of manufacturers feature. It’s a twin of the TNG Milano, the Argo AR150-18, and some others, including the company’s own Newport 150.
